Personal Statement

As an instructor, I believe that on a foundational level students need access to clear, concrete learning objectives. After the foundation stage, however, I emphasize the importance of playfulness and awareness. In this context, playfulness embodies the idea that a meaningful artistic practice arises from an accumulation of experimentation, research, and excitement unencumbered by a fear of failure. Awareness means understanding both the art context in which the student’s art resides and the general context outside of the art world. I help students understand that the visual aspect of art making can have value beyond technical concerns and become the means of expression for a larger conversation.
